Review: "Hands & Feet" by City of Union

With soft guitar notes sliding into a hooking melody right from the get-go, City of Union begins a soft lyrical remembrance of someone lost. Relatable to so many, yet intimate in its own right, Matthew Campbell (aka City of Union) showcases his unique talent of songwriting with the emotional single "Hands & Feet".

"Hands & Feet" was inspired by the relationship between Campbell's father and his father's brother (Keith), who passed away. "Their bond was unlike anything I’ve ever seen and when my uncle Keith was taken by cancer - I could see how much he meant to my dad" says Campbell. The lyrics paint a picture of a life spent together, with personal anecdotes like "We both kissed her, but mine was better. Morning smokes, too young and broke, no one could see us, except Mom and Jesus". Campbell admits that during the writing of the song he also became inspired by his relationship with his own brother. The refrain "growing up side by side, like my hands and feet are, you and me were" reminisces on the universal relationship of brothers, and the bond that ties them. Campbell notes that this signature vulnerability, present in many of his songs, has taken practice to cultivate. "Writing lyrics has always felt natural to me, however writing good lyrics takes a lot of practice. Stepping out on a limb and being honest takes the most practice. I still have a long way to go in that regard".

The video for "Hands & Feet" takes viewers on a tour of small town landscapes and scenes. Directed by Campbell's sister, Sami G Photography, the video was filmed entirely in Campbell's hometown of Franklin County where he spent his childhood. "The idea was to show a very similar landscape to what my father and his brother would have grew up in" Campbell says. "I also wanted to make the video as personal as possible by showing places that meant a lot to me as a child".

City of Union is busy creating new music and anxious to share it with fans. With an end goal of telling "a story in each song" Campbell spends much of his time hashing out concepts of ideas by writing out feelings, poetry, sketching images, and working out production ideas to support the lyrical content. Two new EP's in 2019, as well as several independent videos, are promised from the budding artist that we can't get enough of. Watch the video for "Hands & Feet" below.
